Elizabeth Gaskell news...

Following on from the news that Gaskell's house in Plymouth Grove is going to be renovated, this story on the BBC's website piqued my attention...

Apparently Mrs. Gaskell is "is best known for Cranford", well, only since the BBC's version of it is she. More quality reporting from our national broadcaster.

I've been in the house as it is now and it's not too exciting. the most interesting thing is that it's painted PINK. which I doubt they'll preserve. that makes it noteworthy at the moment. The second most interesting thing is that when Gaskell lived there it were all fields as far as t'eye could see. More or less. Now it's on a big busy road opposite a housing estate. It's not that exciting frankly. And Plymouth Grove in Chorlton-on-Medlock is nothing like Cranford. Though the Victoria Baths down the road is lovely.

I always remenber Plymouth Grove from the International 2 so it always seemed weird that it had once been posh and sophisticated. Manchester hasn't got many venerable authors, so whatever the state, lets turn it into a national trust thing.
